Starting A Family & Puppy Guide
GUIDEBOOK
Overall Title of Section

To Start The Process:

So you want to have pups? You've decided to take the leap and create a family? Read on further for some information regarding that process.

Sverige wolves can take mates whenever they please, although there are certain seasons in which they more commonly will breed to produce pups. In order to have pups, the two characters must have three completed threads together.  If you are in a pack, however, you may want to check with your Alpha first before deciding to take the leap - Alphas make the final decision on whether the pack can withstand having a pregnant mother and pups taking up their stores.

You are not required to have a thread that specifically states that your characters are going through the breeding process, however, you are allowed to as long as all sexual situations are going to fade to black. We do not want the intimate details!

Keep in mind, prospective parents! If you're going to have puppies, the mother NEEDS to remain alive and active for the first 8 weeks in-character of pup development (until weaning). If you go inactive or kill off the mother prior to that, the pups WILL die. There are two exceptions to this rule that can be considered:
1) If another milk-producing mother is found (ie. another that has within 8 weeks in-character given birth to pups in-character) to care for the puppies until properly weaned.
2) If the pups have an "eating" mutation (ie. rock eater, plant eater).  If a pup has an "eating" mutation they can be without a milk producing mother at 4 weeks in-character, as at this time, that mutation will be applicable.

Pups SHOULD have at least one parent around until 6 months in-character of age, even if they are within a pack. However, if that is not possible, the pups can still survive as long as they are weaned (older than 8 weeks in-character) and there is a guardian around.  If this is going to be the case, the guardian should be assigned prior to the parents leaving, however, if pups are in a pack they can be assumed to be caretaken by the pack unless the pack has rules otherwise.  If a pup is abandoned as a loner before 6 months, the pup will not survive, unfortunately.

Litter Submission:

Once you've finished your three required threads and have decided that you definitely want pups, please read this thread, and follow the rules within to submit your litter. An admin will look this over and ensure that everything has been done correctly. There are also rules in this thread that describe how to choose your date of whelping, so please read carefully!

Breeding Between Wolves of Vastly Different Sizes:

Keep in mind that if the father is going to be a significantly larger size than the mother, complications or restrictions will likely occur. This is a very real concern that needs to be thought about before deciding to breed two wolves. If the mother is too small, she could die during whelping, leaving your puppies without a parent! Other long term complications can occur such as paralysis of the mother post-whelping, disfiguration of the mother or puppies, or puppies that are born extremely weak and sickly.  There are certain regulations that might help you decide whether to breed two wolves together:

~ If your female wolf is a dwarf of their species, they will only be able to breed normally with other dwarf wolves of other species, or the smaller range of normal sized azahi and dynroth.  Any other attempted breeding will result in the death of the mother post-whelping and only a single pup "possibly" being able to be born and kept alive (only if there is a milk-producing mother nearby in-character).
~ If the male wolf is approximately twice the size (weight and height) of the female wolf or larger, breeding between the two will not be able to occur without significant long term damage to the female post-whelping, and the litter size will be no larger than 1 or 2 pups that will be very small at birth.
~ If the male wolf and female wolf are the same height, but the male is up to approximately twice the weight or larger than the female, breeding can occur so long as the male is careful, but only 1 or 2 pups will be able to be born, and neither should have inherited giant at that time, and most often they will be small pups depending on the species.  [OOC:  This would be similar to if one were to breed a greyhound female to a mastiff male!]
~ Safest bet: if you are going to breed a large male to a smaller female, the female should be at least 3/4 of the male's size (height and weight) in order to have a normal birth with normal number of pups (including fertility if wished).

Beyond those specifications, just keep in mind that you must be realistic with your expectations of two wolves breeding with one another, wolves that are similarly sized will have the best opportunity to have full, healthy litters!

Breeding Between Two Different Species:

A pup that is the result of breeding between two different species is known as a hybrid. Hybrids are only allowed to be created on-site, and may not be created otherwise.

Hybrid offspring have a maximum height of the height of the tallest parents and a minimum height of the height of the shortest parent. The same goes for the weight, the maximum weight is that of the weight of the largest parent, and the minimum weight is that of the weight of the smallest parent. This does include the parents' mutations such as "giant" or "dwarf" that alter the weight and height. They may fall between the upper and lower ranges or at the minimum or maximum of said ranges.

Colors of hybrids must fall within the color ranges of the mother and father, not to go outside of the ranges unless special mutations are purchased by the hybrids' player. Markings do not have any restrictions.

Anatomy of the hybrids may be closer to one species than the other, or a mix between the two. Either can be correct, however, most often, a hybrid is a mixture between the two.

As to the class of the resulting hybrid, if the classes of the wolves in question match, that is the class that the pup will be. If the classes are different, then the pup will be a rogue.

Gestation Period & Pup Numbers:

Different species have different gestation periods. Please make sure you know how long this will take. You can find this information on the info page for your species.

The gestation period is always that of the mother's species. She is the one carrying the pups, after all. For a hybrid wolf that is pregnant, the gestation period is the average between the two species that created the hybrid. For a hybrid wolf with either one hybrid and one purebred species, or two hybrid parents that is pregnant, the gestation period is 54 days.  For our purposes here, the gestation period is measured in "out of character" days, as in real time measurements.

The number of puppies that can be born is an average between the two species (rounding down). For hybrid wolves the number of puppies born would be no more than 3, unless fertile is taken.

Creating And Adopting Out Pups

Now you've decided to have pups, and you want to design these cute little fluffballs?  Read on for more information concerning these regulations for our game!

Designs

You are allowed total freedom in creating your pups. You may choose the number of pups your characters will have, so long as it does not exceed the maximum for their species as stated in the above information.

The parents of the pups may design them, name them, and choose their skills and mutations OR the parents can leave these things entirely up to the adopters so long as they follow the rules.

Puppies born on Sverige are allowed to have two (2) skills and two (2) mutations that must be inherited from their parents (ie. skills and mutations that the parents have) as well as one free skill or mutation outside of what they could inherit from their parents that is currently available for purchase in the shop. This free skill or mutation can be anything you desire in the shop unless the item is listed otherwise, except for a sub-skill. Puppies may only start with these five "things".

Mutations

Please keep in mind that pups are not allowed to have mutations purchased for them over and above the 2 mutations inherited from the parents, although you may use the free slot for another mutation that is currently available from the shop if you wish (instead of a skill).  Pups will not be allowed to have any mutations purchased for them in addition until they are of the age of 6 months in-character, as in, no other mutations should show in their character's inventory on site.  Please do NOT pre-purchase items for pups until they are 6 months in-character of age - if you wish to purchase things and "hold" them until they are old enough, this MUST be done on an OOC account. This DOES include mutations that are specified as free in the shop, as explained further below.

Immortality or Longevity (pick only one!) can be passed down for "free" without taking up any slots due to the fact they are inherited directly as per their shop description. A pup inheriting Immortality should realize that this cannot be put into effect until after 6 months in-character of age. Keep in mind that you should specify immortality or longevity in the pup's application.

The reason for the mutation restriction is that while there is radiation and other means upon Sverige that give the wolves their mutations, these mutations still have an effect on a body. For a grown wolf, it is generally just a period of getting used to the new mutation and it's energy drain. For a pup, having a maximum of 3 possible mutations at birth already taxes the body quite a bit for their first few months, as that is the period of the most growth of the body, where much energy is needed to support the growth and development of the pup itself.  At 6 months in-character, they are quite developed enough to withstand further mutations, which means they may gain any others they wish at that time!

Adopting Out Pups

Once you have decided how many pups your characters will have and if you want to design them yourselves, etc., create a thread in the adoptions board. You will need to include the following in your thread:
1.) The names, skills, and mutations of each parent, including links to their profiles
2.)  Whether either parent will have Immortality or Longevity that the pups will automatically inherit
3.)  Information on the pups, including the number of pups to be born, when they are to be born, the deadline for adoption, and the names and designs of pups (if you've designed them yourself);
4.)  Your requirements for adoption - these may range to specific mutations or skills you want the pups to inherit from their parents, or a way you wish them to look as far as a design.  Any requirement is allowed, including requirements to keep pups actively played, as role-players of the parents do have the right to re-adopt out a pup of their character's if they go inactive.

There is no set application you must use, if you wish to require one for adopting out your pups. However, if you wish to have a writing sample, you may only ask for one sample, and you cannot require a word count from that sample, to allow fairness.

Playing the Pups

Until they are 8 weeks old in-character, the pups can be NPCed by the parents. If a pup is not adopted by a player before it reaches 8 weeks in-character, it will be considered as having died. Any living pups, at this time, will be capable of moving about on their own and can begin developing their abilities and practicing their skills. However, running off on their own will be extremely dangerous. A parent or assigned guardian should always be nearby until they are 6 months in-character old.

There is no special "aging system" in place so that your pups become instant adults.

RE: Starting A Family & Puppy Guide

Puppy Development Guide

Sverige wolves, being completely original species to the world of Sverige, have a puppy development chart that is also unique to them. The following is a guideline to follow for puppies for all species, including hybrids.

Sverige time moves two times as fast in-character as real time, meaning for every "real" day there are two Sverige in-character days. All ages below are meant to be in-character ages!

Puppy Development By Age

~ At birth pups are around one to five pounds, depending on species, and they gain about 1-7 lbs per week (dependent upon species and eventual adult size) until they reach 8 weeks of age.   Pups' eyes do not open until 10 - 15 days of age, and they are limited to crawling about slowly with their forelegs and survive completely from mother's milk at this time.

~ At 4 weeks, they can eat pre-chewed meat and will begin to be completely weaned from the mother.  It is also at this time that any "eating" mutations will start to manifest (rock eater, plant eater, etc) They also begin to be seen playing and walking around unsteadily, but must stay very close to the pack and the protection of their parents, as they still need to eat somewhat frequently and if left on their own would be an easy meal for a scavenger.

~ At 8 weeks / two months, Sverige wolf pups are approximately 25%-30%  of their adult weight/height and are entirely weaned from their mother, eating meat that is brought back from hunts.  They can follow their parents up to a mile or two from the den before tiring and they begin to show guard hairs on their pelts, a premonition of their true adult colors. They will also, at this time, first begin to show their elemental or physical affinities, allowing them to learn more about them through use and training by their parents. Pups at this time may begin to gain XP for practicing their skills and being trained in their skills. This will be determined in normal "time" you may not "advance" your thread to a future date so that they can begin to learn earlier. At this time, pups that do NOT have players will be counted as "non-surviving".

~ At four months, Sverige wolf pups are 40%-50% of their adult weight and height and can accompany adults on hunts. They are still closely kept with the den or pack, however and are not allowed out on their own without a guardian. They begin learning how to hunt at this point and will continue to learn. Their complete pelts colors and markings fill in and they look like they will as an adult, just smaller and less well-muscled.

~ At six months, Sverige wolf pups are 75%-80% of their adult weight/height.  This is the age at which Immortality can first appear to affect a wolf.  Six month old pups are generally allowed to leave the den completely unsupervised at this point, and this is the point at which a pup can survive if it is no longer with it's parents, pack or guardian, as they can hunt small game and scavenge. All of their adult teeth are in, and though they may seem like a scrawny version of an adult, they could pass as one from a distance.  Pups at this time will also now have the ability to develop new mutations besides those that were inherited from their parents at birth.

~ At eight months, Sverige wolf pups are their full adult weight and height, and are indistinguishable from the adults, at least physically. If pups are still with the pack, they are now considered as adults for the purposes of pack population and rankings.

~ At one year of age, Sverige wolves reach their physical sexual maturity and are able to breed. This is the youngest age at which a Sverige wolf can breed.

RE: Starting A Family & Puppy Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the mother and father's skills finalized in terms of what skills pups can choose?

For the father, all skills that he has are set in stone upon the agreement of when conception has taken place. For the mother, if she gains new skills while she is carrying the pups, the pups will be able to also choose from those skills at birth.  Keep in mind that the parents should reflect this in adoption threads: if you are adopting the pups out far before they will be born / conceived, and you want the skills set at a certain point, you should note that.

When choosing parent skills, can a sub-skill be chosen without the prerequisite main skill?

Yes, as long as one of the parents has that subskill you may choose it as one of the two skills gained from the parents.

Do pups need to 'apply' on the site like any other new character?

Yes. All pups must create a thread in the characters forum and be accepted just like any other character. This serves so that the staff may look over your pup character and verify that it fits within the standards for puppies and species on Sverige.

When do pups learn to "talk"?

First of all, Sverige wolves make wolf noises, not speech as we consider it.  However, 8 weeks in-character old is when they can use juvenile communication to make themselves understood to other wolves. For puppies it's going to be whines, yips, tiny howls, etc, but is portrayed as speech so that we humans can understand it. Thus there is no requirement to roleplay your puppy as "learning to talk", they are wolves and learn their wolfish communication skills from parents and pack.

When can pups start learning (and gaining XP) for skill use?

Pups are able to start learning and using very basic skills at 8 weeks in-character old. They will generally be taught by their parents in this manner.

Can pups level up skills before they are able to use them?

No. Pups must start out using all of their skills at beginner. If they've gained enough xp to level up a skill to the next level prior to being able to use their skills at 8 weeks, they must at least finish one thread using a skill at beginner before leveling it up via the Improvements forum.  This is due to the fact that pups, while born with magic DO have to figure it out first.

When can pups start developing new mutations besides their birth mutations?

At 6 months in-character, pups can start developing new mutations of their own.

Can pups choose free mutations upon character creation?

Not unless they are choosing a free mutation as their "free skill or mutation" upon birth.

What happens if a parent or both parents go inactive or die?

Keep in mind that we do have an "away" board for this very purpose, if someone can get online for just a few minutes they can type up a quick away, which is not difficult to do.  As well, it is highly suggested to speak to your role playing partners about your characters breeding and having pups before it happens to ensure that you both understand the necessity of sticking around the game at least until the pups can be weaned or taken care of by a guardian. Most of the rules about inactivity or death are to deter people from creating characters solely for the purpose of having pups and then dying so that they no longer have to play them.
