Ahti grinned a bit when his son suddenly stressed out but caught the water just in time. "It's a matter of focus. I know that it's hard, but as long as you don't get distracted, either by your feelings or by something that catches your eye, you should be able to move this water around a bit." he told him.

He let Skye figure out how to hold on to the orb for a while, then continued. "See if you can move it a bit. Up, down, left, right. And maybe stretch it thin, like so." He pulled out another orb, then changed it's state to a more oval-like line of water, still floating in the air, in a snake-like form.

Skye's eyes narrowed in concentration. He watched his father in awe of his command of the water. He wanted to one day be as strong as him but figured that to be impossible given how amazing he was. No one was stronger, or faster, or better than his dad. No one.
He slowly tugged at the orb. At first it resisted his touch but then it shifted ever so slightly to the right, breaking his concentration. "I did it! --oops.." His ears drooped a bit, embarrassed. However, a bit more sure of his abilities he pulled another drop from the existing water and lifted it to the same position. At least he had learned that much. He once again resumed the task of moving the drop, this time hopefully not getting distracted.
Once again after a moment or two the drop shifted to the right, then he managed to shift it left. Not interested in up and down he focused on trying to flatten it. This proved to be a far more difficult task. In his mind he was trying to pull it both left and right at the same time in order to make it thinner. The stubborn orb seemed to quiver and shake but refused to follow his orders.

Again, young Sulo Skye seemed to lose his focus, but at least he had the instinct to get another orb and try again. Ahti nodded almost invisibly at that, and watched as his boy was clearly able to pull out a new orb and move it around.

Stretching it however, seemed too difficult a task without proper instruction. Although this was to be expected, he'd wanted to see if Skye could come up with something. But instead of elongating the water, the young mage seemed to try and move the whole of the orb both left and right. It trembled, but didn't do either, because the boy was strong in both directions. Ahti shook his head. "To change the water's shape, you must concentrate on where it flows towards. You're now pulling at all of the water at the same time, and that won't work if you do it in both directions. Instead, try to feel the separate droplets and flows within this same orb." he explained. Honestly, it wasn't so much as knowledge, but a feeling of flowing that he tried to communicate, but that just didn't seem able to be put into exact words.

Skye focused hard and concentrated on the droplets inside the orb itself as his father instructed. For the first time it made sense in his brain and he was able to feel the flow of the water. He simply encouraged the drop to flow more in the same direction. Slowly the orb stretched and thinned out. His eyes widened and he barked with glee, "I got it! I finally understand!" He let the orb flatten out and ball up and then flatten out again to show his mastery of the topic. Tiredness was physically showing in his eyes and shoulders. This lesson had taken a toll, though he wouldn't outright tell his father. Besides he still wanted to be able to make clouds. Straightening himself back up he looked up at his dad, "Now how do I make it make a cloud?"

Ahti watched, pleased that his son had taken up the concept. Still, when he compared the question to the sagged shoulders, he shook his head. "Not today. Affinities aren't something to learn in an hour or even a day. It takes strength, and to get strength, you'll need practise without overdoing it. Someone once told me it's much like training muscles." he explained. He felt sorry for Skye to not be able to learn it today, but there was no way he could teach the young boy all of this at once. "Clouds are like mist. An infinite amount of tiny droplets. You can make it from a water source like the lake or that droplet of yours, or by taking water out of the air. Much like ice is also water, there is water in the sky, as you will come to see. But that takes time, and elemental strength, to grasp all these tiny water particles and hold them." Rather a long speech, but hopefully he got the point across.

He stood. "I think it's time you took a rest. You're not to use the water magic today, not until you've slept, or you'll only come to suffer headaches and even less of a connection with the element. Unfortunately, such is the way of things. But you're off for a good start. Try shaping the water again in a few days." he smiled, and nudged the boy's head. Then, he nodded towards the den, and assumed his daily walk along the Zoo's perimeter.

Skye's shoulders drooped even further as his father spoke. It was true that the lesson had taken its toll on him but he didn't want to believe it. He had wanted to touch the clouds as his brother and mother could. His eyes darkened and fell to the ground. He didn't say anything in response. The gentle nudge of his father, while intended to be reassuring only broke his heart further. 'If moving a drop of water could be this hard and take this much work...I'll never touch the clouds...' he thought to himself. Slowly, as if dragging a heavy chain behind him he turned, head and tail down, back to the den.
