A Kiss of Fire
It was a pleasant enough day, and he was warmed by thoughts of the hunt he had just been on with his father and siblings.  Now though, they grew tired and as they all huddled together for warmth in their den he breathed a soft sigh.  He had managed to prove everyone wrong today, managed to show them that his blindness did not make him useless, or weak.  He was the one that tracked the deer, he was the one that found it.  He smiled as he drifted into a peaceful sleep, muttering something about how wrong they were.  His mother curled over him, and looked to her mate with love, "Your son will never let them tell him what he can not do."  The larger male grinned, nuzzling her, "Just as stubborn as his mother."  He laid down near her, and the silence of sleep overtook the den.

His nose twitched.

There it was again.

Something bit his leg. Then his ear.  He whimpered in his sleep.

He couldn't move.

His eyes opened in a panic - nothingness. A loud roar was blinding him and howls of pain and anguish rang out.  He tried to move again, and felt sluggish - breathing was difficult and the air felt hot and thick.  He could feel and smell the form of his mother, and nudged her, "Wake up... something is wrong."  She wouldn't move. What was happening?   He let out a bark and a howl, jumping on her body.  It was limp, and she wouldn't wake.  He tried to walk toward the scent of his father, and tripped over one of his brothers.  This form coughed, and woke with a start.

"Ty, wha-" He stopped, because his eyes worked - and he saw what Ty could not.  The still forms of his parents and the black smoke that filled den. The angry red flames and embers that licked at the entrance. He ran around, making noises as he tried desperately to wake his parents and his smaller sister. But they would not - he did not know that the smoke had filled their lungs. He did not know that, though still alive, they were suffocating.  It was pure luck that Ty and him were spared.  "Ty we have to leave."

Ty pulled his ears back, "Why won't they wake up..."

"Ty, we have to leave, push up next to me."

Ty did as he was told... ".... What is happening?" A new smell caught in his nose, death, fear, burning fur. "Why won't they wake up?!"  His voice raised, and choked on the words - he knew.

"Just, stay with me."

His brother moved forward and Ty followed, unable to see anything with all the noises and confusion, to many scents bearing down on him.  The flames licked at his sides, and he yipped in pain.  "Keep going!"  His brother pushed onward with him, and the roar of the flames seemed to intensify.  The scent of his parents, or his sister, wafted to him for the last time and he pushed out of the den into the blistering heat.  Instantly, he couldn't anymore - instinct overtook him - and he bolted.  He could hear his brother screaming his name.  He could hear the roar of the fire, the yelps of pain, the dying howls and the mourning calls of his pack.

He ran. His paws cut themselves on rocks, and he stumbled blindly, hitting a few trees but they seemed weak, and warm, and crumbled on contact.  He sneezed and slowed down, the taste of ash in his mouth and the heat of the flames finally gone.

He pulled his ears back, finally letting the tears come.  He raised his maw, and let out a howl that was carried by the wind.  Pain, and anguish, and fear.

Alone.

It rang that word and echoed it through the dead forest, as mourning, as statement, as a question, and pleading for help but still just that one word.

Alone.

RE: A Kiss of Fire
He dropped his head, the sadness sinking deep into him like a plague. The familiar scent of his home was gone, washed away by this scent of fire and the charred remains of the forest he once called home.

In the distance, other howl sounded- but it was not from his pack. The neighbouring pack had sent up a howl of questioning. They were peaceful together, so Ty guessed that they wanted to help- but he knew how the Lerks were, the pride as a species and in strength would have made him far to large of a target. And what would they think, when they found out he had just run?

He could still hear the hiss and crack of the dying embers from afar- closer to his pack. He turned, taking a deep breath and barking, letting the sound fall out into the area sounding him. There was so little now that it was able to travel further than normal- and he was actually able to pick up the outline of his den from where he stood. He walked back- toward home- toward death.

RE: A Kiss of Fire
His pawsteps were interrupted by a harsh growl, he turned to face the wolf who was questioning him - in his own lands.

"Ty?"  The out of breath response was shocked, as if amazed by the fact that this blind reject had surfaced in the destruction.

"Yeah..."  He paused, lowering his head and tail, "Where is everyone?"

The wolf let out a cold laugh, as if taunting the younger wolf.  "Dead, Ty.  The fire claimed your parents, your sister, it injured your brother enough to where he won't wake up anymore but he still breathes, barely."  The words were snarls, meant to cut deep into Ty.  "That would make you alpha, if you weren't so weak.  But for now, it is me."

His ears flattened, he didn't want to be an alpha.  Not now, how could he be?  He was still just a pup.

"And you're just the worthless pup that we are going to have to care for, only because your father made us all promise that..."

Ty sighed, the breath being pulled from him.  This couldn't be happening.  His family, dead?  His brother, fading?

"Come, follow me, we will take you home."  Another voice spoke, this one a female - was it his mothers sister?  He couldn't distinguish anything, not now, not in his panic.

He trotted behind the pair, and the scent of burning flesh only got stronger as he approached his home.  The ground still warm with the fires touch.  He could hear the whimpers of pain, short howls of loss.  "Is it night yet?"  He questioned.

"Yes, Ty, and we will mourn for your parents soon, you have to join us in that.  From now on, you will stay in your den.  Their den.  We will feed you, keep you alive, but no one will teach you anymore - you must do that yourself.  Understand now, to us, you are only a memory.  You died with them."  His voice rang cruel, and heartless.  As it had to be.  No one had time now, not for him.  He would only be raised here, kept alive, until he left.  But would he leave them?
